Ontario gets the government it deserves

This was posted in today’s Toronto Sun.

Business Editor, Linda Leatherdale writes of a rumour coming from the Ministry of
Finance that when Harper lowers the GST to 5%, McNutty (Flip-Flop McFly according to Ms. Leatherdale) will raise the PST by 2%, 1 for municipalities and 1 for transit.

So, it only took what.. a week, not even, for McGuinty to show his stripes. Now ok, I know it’s only a rumour but if it becomes fact, we have here a whopper here.

“I won’t cut taxes but I won’t raise them either.” - Dalton McGuinty in 2003, in 2004 he levied the 2 Billion Dollar Health Tax
“I won’t raise your taxes.” - Dalton McGuinty in 2007. What does 2008 hold?

McGuinty broke how many promises and yet Ontarians voted him back in with a majority. If the next four years shows the trend that the past four years set, Ontario will be in a sad, sad state.

UPDATED: I watched Focus Ontario this evening on the replay. McGuinty was interviewed and said He’d like to see 1% of the GST going to cities. Is he just buttering things up?

He wears his sunglasses at night…

Cool harperWell my fellow Canuckistanians, we have a chance, a real chance, of a Harper majority government. The newest poll out there says Harper has 40%, Dion has 28 and the other nutjobs have less than that… All that really matters are the big two and well, Harper has it by the cahones. Just what we need, four years of Harper. That’s like saying we need four years of McGuinty!

Don’t get me wrong, I like Harper’s Government. It’s been firm when needed, he doesn’t sound like a dithering idiot and seems to be hitting the right buttons when it comes to taxes, family and such. Now why is this working so well? Because he’s in perpetual election mode. Harper’s sharp like a tack. He keeps giving and giving and we keep taking it in. $100 per month per child here, a tax cut there. The more bait he gives, the deeper on the hook we go.

Now we are at 40%, that magic number, the only place that says 2/5’s means 1/2. 40% is the number where it is entirely conceivable that a majority government can happen. A Harper majority scares me. No checks or balances. Just hard-core conservatives to the N-th degree. And I thought a McGuinty majority was scary, at least that devil we know.

The Prime Minister said it best when he said that it is time to fish or cut bait, I just hope we all don’t get stuck by the hook!

John Tory's Campaign

My five year old son was playing Legos today and called me over to look at his latest creation.Except for the hair colour I think it sums John Tory’s campaign to a tee.

This was Tory’s campaign to win and he just didn’t do it. I know that faith-based schools were a part of his platform when he won the PC Leadership but come on, schools and religion are two of the worst things to stir the pot in alone, stir them together and look at what happens.

Worst still was the flip-flop. If you are going to believe in something and stand by it, you shouldn’t have flip-flopped with the free-vote!

Four more years! !@#$

Four more years of broken promises. Four more years of status quo. Four more years of blaming previous governments for their inability to keep promises… wait. What? McGuinty has been re-elected. That means that he can’t blame anyone else as he inherited his own mess. What I mean by this is, McGuinty will now be serving his second term, so if he blames the mistakes on the past government, the direct relation is McGuinty’s first-term.

No more blaming Ernie Eves, Mike Harris, Bob Rae and David Peterson for the bag of crap he inherited. He has, in-fact, inherited his own bag of crap. I just hope he remembers to flush.

Tory changes tune… why?

Charles Adler commented on this in today’s National Post and I have to wonder why Tory threw the religious schooling issue under the bus. Ok he hasn’t really thrown it under the bus, but he significantly weaked his credibility in my view by allowing a free-vote. Thus is the man of principal who is touting himself as the someone who has leadership skills. You cannot spin this in a positive way this flip-flop. I’ve talked to a few people and all have said that he should have stuck with this issue as it was because really, it’s a non-starter. Just as in the States when GW Bush wanted to extend gov’t funding to faith-based charities, most said no. To take the money they had to open up and conform to/report to the gov’t. They declined and I suspect most private schools in Ontario would say the same. Thanks but no thanks. What the real issue with education is in my opinion is why can the Catholic boards offer more services, have more teachers and resources but spent on average $100/less per student? HuH?
What’s really apparent is that the “T/tory” message is not getting out and as such people are not seeing the differences between Liberals and Tories. In that case a lot of people will go with the Devil they know.  Sigh…

Same Ocean, completely different.

Flagler Beach, FloridaUp until August I had only been to the ocean when I traveled to New York City. The last time I went was in 1997 and as per my usual routine, I’d go on the Staten Island Ferry to view Manhattan. I had seen the ocean then lots, but never touched it, in fact the thought of sticking my hand in any water around NYC was a scary thought. Now flash forward 10 years later and this picture. Taken at Flagler Beach, Florida at the end of August. The water was a lot warmer than I thought it would be and the pull of the waves was… awesome. Later in the trip we went to Jekyll Island in Georgia. The sand was much finer and even though there was a storm in the air and the clouds were fairly dark, the water was so nice. Those two beaches alone made the 22 hours of driving in a mini-van with kids worth it.
