2010 predictions…
Filed under: General, Government, Humour, News, Politics, Travel, United States
Yes, New Years is just a few days away so I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and predict a few things myself. Hey, even I have the tin-foil hat to match!
In 2010 (and in no particular order)…
There will be no Election Federally. The Liberal Party will continue to languish on the sidelines while Iffy remains predictable. Expect 2010 to be the last year of Iffy’s reign.
Frank McKenna will again say he’s not interested in the Leadership of the Liberal Party.
Stephen Harper will remain Prime Minister. Look for a reprise behind the piano singing “Day in a Life”.
Bob Rae will still be Bob Rae (Socialist in Liberal Clothing) and all that that entails.
Provincially, Dalton McLiar’s Liberals will win the two by-elections because Ontario voters are sheep.
Ontario will remain a “have-not” province.
Newfie Jokes will officially be renamed Ontario Jokes.
On July 1st, 2010 we will have the BST/HST/DST whatever you want to call it, because you can tax people into prosperity no?
Tim Hortons will raise the price of their crappy coffee again.
Canadian Tire will continue to have that annoying slogan and music on all of their commercials, and yet I still cannot buy just one bolt, I have to buy a package of 20.
I will finally finish the front deck to our house.
2010 will ring forth a new swath of celebrity deaths that will make people realize how empty their lives are by following these celebrities. They will be sad at their deaths and say things like, “Wow I didn’t see it coming.” Then these people will find new celebs to follow and life will be good again.
Tiger Woods will be divorced. Elin Woods will be rich.
Britney Spears will have another breakdown and shave her head again.
Another Twilight movie will come out boring millions of husbands, subjecting them to hours of mind-numbing stupidity.
Johnny Cash will still be dead. So will John Wayne.
Some unknown idiot with way too much time on their hands and no job will grab a video camera and upload something so stupid onto Youtube that millions will view it and love it.
Some new web site will come on the scene that will make Facebook and MySpace obsolete and yet be so stupid that people miss the time wasting site Twitter.
2010 will be the new 1985 with every one-hit wonder from 1985 being remixed by someone in 2010 because originality in music died around 1985.
On December 30th, 2010 I will write another blog posting predicting 2011 and seeing how wrong I was about 2010. I really hope I am wrong about 2010.
Happy New Years everyone, don’t forget not to talk on your cell while driving, always eat your veggies and remember your manners. - Phil
Hmm…
“Maybe if I am looking down, they wont notice my tax grab…”
A Case for Mixed Member Proportional Representation
Canada’s current first-past-the-post is an OK system of electing members however there are instances that voters are left holding their noses when they vote. With the looming election this fall, I am faced with this instance and I think it is time that we have an alternative.
I am overall ok with how our Prime Minister has lead the country for the past 3.5 years (already that long?) but I am not impressed with our local MP. In order to keep the government that I think is ok or at least better than the alternatives, I have to vote for an MP who I don’t think serves my riding’s best interests. Conversely if I want rid of the MP, I have to vote for a party who I don’t agree with the leadership of (Iggy & Co.).
What is a voter to do?
MMP would solve this as it would enable me, the voter, to vote for the party I sorta-kinda support while voting against the MP who I don’t support.
I know many in different ridings who are in the same boat. Sadly most of those ridings are also Conservative Party held. Perhaps this reflects on the caliber of candidate they offer, or on the caliber of the voters who vote them in.
What is a voter to do?
$500,000,000 does not equal $15,000,000,000

It was posted in several places including TSN and in the Toronto Star that Dalton McGuinty supports a third NHL team in Ontario. Great. Thanks McGuinty. As usual you spend lots of time dealing with stuff that DOESN’T MATTER and not deal with what is really important like the economy, jobs or oh… I don’t know. How the Finance Minister budgeted for a $500M deficit and now we’re heading for a $15B deficit.
Perhaps Mr. McGuinty should have paid attention in math class. $500,000,000 does not equal $15,000,000,000
Wise Words from a Wise Man
“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. you cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn. You cannot build character and courage by takening away man’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”
Abraham Lincoln
American Politics crack me up.
American Politics crack me up. Really. Did you know that the United States will lose 500 Million Jobs per month. That’s amazing considering only 310 Million people live in the United States.
Methinks that instead of a bloated economic stimulus package, US leaders could do with a Math and a Geography lesson or five!
Here’s the YouTube Clip.
The 3 Stooges (aka 3 Losers)

With apologies to the real ones.
It shows me the real flaw with our parliamentary system when three losers can join together and throw out the person who has the legitimate right to a minority government. There are few days I ever wish for someone like Paul Martin, Jean Chretien or Brian Mulroney to be PM again. If the 3 Stooges pull the big one Monday morning, I’d like to see them back.
GFYS GM, Ford and Chrysler

The big three automakers in Canada are holding their hands out for money from the Canadian Government. In order to “save” 100,000 jobs in Ontario, they want billions in loans. In my opinion, the big three can GFYS!
No WAY should any corporation, large or small, get a bailout with tax money. The automaker’s issues are their own. THEY kept building SUVS when the market didn’t support it. THEY gave credit to people who didn’t earn it. THEY caved into the unions when it came to wages. THEY gave their executives large bonuses while THEIR companies tanked. THEY created THEIR own problems.
THEY should have to fix it.
If I run a business and manage it so poorly that it’s going bankrupt, but I employ two workers, would I get a handout from the government? No. It would be said that I should have run the business better and that I would have to deal with the consequences of my actions. So too should GM, Ford and Chrysler; Really so should they all. The banks that are getting 50 billion in mortgages bought from they by the federal government when they didn’t ask for it. The banks don’t need the buyouts, and they are not passing the savings onto their customers.
All levels of Government, federal and provincial should be looking at ways of getting the private sector to boost job creation, not handing out money to companies that have shown they are irresponsible with money. GM lost 15 Billion in 3 months and they get a handout!
So much for responsibility!
LCBO Sucks
Filed under: General, Government, Money, Ontario, Politics
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario Sucks! I tried to purchase a very specific brand and vintage of brandy for a friend. The LCBO said they don’t carry it anymore and could not order it for me. I found in New York State a liquor store that would get it for me, but only if I order a case. Asked the friend, they said go ahead so I did. On friday I hopped across the border to pick up the case and bring over. Like a good boy, I declared what I had when I was at Canada Customs, then the fun started.
The case cost $268.00US. After GST, PST, Duty and LCBO Markup, I was out an additional $343 on top of the 268 for the case. WTF!
Now I don’t mind (ok I do) the GST, PST and Duty but come on LCBO Markup? The LCBO Markup was 202 of the 343 I paid. For what? THe LCBO did not get the hooch for me. The LCBO did NOT order the product or help in getting. The LCBO did nothing to help other than the person on the phone suggest buying in NY State!
So for the LCBO’s efforts, they earn $202. No wonder the LCBO is raking in record profits!
Great PR for a Lame song/campaign
As a person who is a bit of a political nut, I have to laugh at the recent stunt pulled by Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (insert nails on chalkboard here). She ran this contest to have the public pick her campaign song, then does a spoof ad off the Sopranos finale to get people to see she chose… “You and I” by Celine Dion.
BARF!
The commercial was classic, a nice spoof, and having Johnny Sack in the commercial was a bonus. BUT COME ON… Celine Dion? Hey Hillary, do you know where Celine Dion is from. Up here in the Great White North. We keep trying to block her from coming back to Canada, but she doesn’t listen and you Americans won’t keep her.
If I was running for any elected office in the USA I wouldn’t pick a song from Canada, and I certainly wouldn’t pick one by Celine Dion.
There are plenty of good songs out there Hillary, please flush this one.
