Seaway Ice wins championship

High school skating team takes home top prize in Ottawa

nOTTAWA – Four first place finishes led the way for Seaway District High Schools Seaway Ice skate team to win first overall at the 2017 Skate Canada Eastern Ontario High School Skating Invitational April 11th in KanatannThe competition, held at the Kanata Recreation Centre, had 150 competitors from 26 schools in Eastern Ontario.nnSeaway fielded a team of five skaters who competed in solo and pairs events, as well as in team events.nnCameryn Broad finished fifth in the Solo Dance 1 category for the Seaway Ice team.nnErika Jordan won first place in the Star 6 Free Skate category, and first in Dance Team with partner Abby Jordan. Abby placed fifth in the Solo Dance 3 category.nnReagan Belanger placed third in the Star 5 Free Skate program and sixth in Dance Team with partner Kristyn VanHoof.nnVanHoof won first place in the Star 8 Free Skate event, and first in the Silver interpretative dance event.nnIn the team elements event, Erika Jordan, Cameryn Broad, Abby Jordan and Reagan Belanger finished ninth.nnThe results saw the school place first overall with 55 points.nn“I am very proud of how the team did this year,” said coach Sarah Dooley. “We were the smallest team in the top ten for the competition.”nnSkater Abby MacMillan was unable to compete in the event due to technical issues with tests passed. MacMillan coached with Dooley for the event.nn“Abby was a great coach to the skaters and helped them succeed,” said Dooley. “We will miss her next year as she graduates this year.”nnThis is the first year Seaway has won the overall competition.nnSecond place in the competition went to East Northumberland Secondary School from Brighton with 50 points.nnThird place was awarded to Regiopolis Notre Dame Catholic High School from Kingston with 47.5 points.nnThis is the final year for the invitational high school competition due to the merger of the SkateCanada Ontario and SkateCanada Eastern Ontario organizations.
