Spartans struggle on the court

nnSeaway drop two games to fall to 1-3 for the season.nnAVONMORE – The Seaway Spartans junior girls basketball team faced a difficult week traveling to Avonmore to take on the Tagwi Warriors October 4th before hosting the Double-A St. Joseph’s Panthers on October 6th.nnTagwi Warriors 44nSeaway Spartans 24nnTagwi took an early lead in the game, scoring 11 points in the first quarter to take an 11-3 lead over Seaway. Brooke Levere had the lone basket for the team in the quarter.nnKrista Strader led the Spartans in the second quarter, netting three shots while Lilly Lewis added one. Tagwi added nine points, extending their lead 20-11 by half time.nnThe Warriors broke open the scoring in the third quarter with Christina Stinson scoring two buckets and went two-for-two on foul shots in the third quarter for Tagwi while Emily Adams netted six points.nnThe Warriors held the Spartans to just three points in the quarter with Anna Henderson netting one shot, and going one-for-two on foul shots. Tagwi led Seaway 30-14 going into the fourth quarter.nnThe Spartans got some traction in the final quarter. Henderson scored twice while Erin Gibbons and Veronica Alfaro-Peters each scored once. Stinson and Adams pushed back each with three-pointers and kept the Spartans from getting any further in the game. Tagwi sailed to victory beating Seaway 44-24. Henderson led the Spartans with eight points, Strader with six, while Gibbons had four points going two-for-four in foul shots.nnThe team would next take on the St. Joseph’s Panthers in Iroquois two days later.nnSt. Joseph’s Panthers 52nSeaway Spartans 15nnIROQUOIS – The Spartans hosted the league dominating Panthers Friday with a rough first half for the team. St. Joe’s scored 24 points in the first quarter holding Seaway to just six points. Lewis landed two shots in the first.nnSeaway was held scoreless in the second quarter while St. Joe’s added eight more points to lead 32-6 at half time.nnLevere had the sole basket for the Spartans in the third quarter as the team could not get past the Panthers’ defense. The Panthers added 10 points in the quarter to take a 42-8 lead into the fourth.nnHenderson finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth landing a two-pointer and going one-for-two in foul shots. Levere added two more baskets for the Spartans, her highest point total of the season. The Panthers added 10 more points to take the win 52-15.nnThe Spartans have the week off to regroup before hosting the North Dundas Devils October 19th.
