(UCDSB/Casselman photo)nnCORNWALL – As the silver medalist team from the county curling championship, the Seaway Spartans girls curling team had an uphill battle in their quest to compete at the provincial championship in Fort Francis next month.nnThe team, skipped by Annaka Gibbons, began the two day Eastern Ontario championship, held in Cornwall February 20-21st, in the ‘B’ pool. Playing on the team with Gibbons was Erin Gibbons – vice, Martina Lewis – second, Jodie Robinson – lead, and Lily Lewis – alternate.nnThey won all three games in the pool, defeating Kingston Collegiate, Bishop Smith and Carleton Place.nnSeaway advanced to a crossover game, taking on the North Dundas Devils. North Dundas won the county championship the previous week by defeating Seaway, and reached the crossover game finishing second in the ‘A’ pool.nn“They are a really strong team,” Gibbons told The Leader. “They were really tough to play against.”nnSeaway lost to North Dundas in a close match, which placed the Spartans into the bronze medal game against Bishop Smith. North Dundas advanced to the gold medal game, where they defeated Vankleek Hill Collegiate. They play for the provincial championship March 20-25.nnIn the bronze medal match, the Spartans defeated Bishop Smith in seven ends.nn“Annaka called a really strong game,” said Jeffrey Crooke, coach of the Spartans team. “It was disappointing to lose the crossover game, but the team played really well.”
