OTTAWA – A smaller track and field team does not equal small results, at least not for Seaway District High School.nnNine out the ten members of the team qualified May 8th at the SDG county meet for spots in the Eastern Ontario Track and Field championship.nn“We had a wonderful day,” said coach Trevor Thompson. “For a team of only 10 kids, we rocked the team results.”nnMidget girls athlete Lilly Lewis won two gold and a silver in her events. She won the girls 400 metre race with a time of 1:08.95 minutes, three-and-a-half seconds ahead the pack. She also won the 300 metre hurdles event with a time of 57.80 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. In the girls 200 metre sprint, Lewis’ run in 30.35 seconds earned her second place, one second out of first.nnDanika Nielson also came back with two gold and a silver. She won the midget girls long jump event, landing a 4.21 metre jump. She also edged out her competition in the midget triple-jump, landing a 8.54 metre jump that was one centimetre longer than the competition. Nielson finished second in the high jump, with a 1.2 metre jump.nnErin Gibbons’s 21.02 metre throw in midget girls javelin earned her a silver in the competition. Her 17 metre throw in the midget discus earned her bronze for the event, while Gibbons finished in fifth place in the shot put eventnnRunner Erika Jordan won the girls 1500 metre steeplechase with a time of 5:44 minutes, nearly two minutes ahead of the competition. She finished in third place in the 1500 metre race in a time of 6:19.79, 19.5 seconds behind first place.nnAnna Henderson took home three gold in her events for the day. Her 9.28 metre throw earned her first in the junior girls shot put event, while her 25.29 metre throw in discus put her in first for the event. An impressive 30.42 metre throw in javelin, over 4.5 metres ahead of second place Alayna Gaudette from North Dundas, earned Henderson first for that event.nnBrianna O’Neil won senior girls shot put with a 9.45 metre throw. She also finished third in javelin with a 23.62 metre throw, and fourth in discus.nnTrystyn Hummel both of her events for the day, earning gold in the senior girls discus (25.89 metres) and javelin (25.23 metre).nnAdam Tibben won gold in the midget boys 300 metre hurdles event, finishing the event in 53.32 seconds. He earned a silver in the high jump with his 1.53 metre jump.nnAlex Stewart won the junior boys 3000 metre race, finishing in 11:27.04 minutes. He was silver in the boys 2000 metre steeplechase and finished third in the junior boys 1500 metre race.nnThe EOSSAA track and field championship will be held May 24-25th in Kingston.
