nnCORNWALL – For the second year in a row, the Seaway Spartans boys baseball team reached the SDG county championship finals.nnFor many years, the Holy Trinity Falcons and St. Joe’s Panthers would play one game as the only two teams to battle for the right to represent SDG at EOSSAA. Seaway made it three last season, joining the county league.nnThis year, the addition of North Dundas and La Citadelle made the SDG championship a real tournament.nnLast year, Seaway played the spoiler in their premier season, upsetting the Falcons 11-8 to take on the Panthers for the championship. The Spartans lost to St. Joe’s 11-0. This year both the Falcons and Spartans were out for redemption.nnIn their pool, Seaway took on the North Dundas Devils first May 17th in Cornwall, handily beating them 13-3. Ben Lapier had four runs for Seaway, Curran Gilmour, Dean Lapier, and Emytt Fetterly each scored twice. Joshua Broad had three RBI’s for the team.nnThe team’s second match saw the Spartans lose to the Panthers 16-6. Colin Van Hoof scored two runs and had one RBI in the loss.nnThe Spartans had a 1-1 record in their pool, tied with the Panthers.nnThe tie was settled on score differential, with Seaway earning a spot in the final.nnIn the other pool, Holy Trinity found their way past La Citadelle to the final.nnThe resulting rematch held May 18th was a no-hitter. Unfortunately for Seaway, it was not in their favour.nnStarting on the mound for Seaway, pitcher Curran Gilmour pitched two innings before allowing one run. He struck out 13 Falcons’ batters before the sixth inning.nnLooking to create some space, Holy Trinity put three runners across the plate in the inning, extending their lead to 4-0. The Falcons added one more in the seventh inning to close the game with a 5-0 win.nnFalcons pitcher Nathaniel Van Putten pitched all seven innings, allowing a walk and one error, to pick up the county championship win. He struck out 19 Seaway batters in the game. Gilmour had 18 K’s in the match.nnThe Falcons will travel to Kingston May 23rd to compete for the EOSSAA championship.
