Second period woes sink Lions again

nnCARDINAL – Another four-goal second period put the Morrisburg Lions into a hole they could not get out of, resulting in another lop-sided loss for the team.nnThe Lions travelled upstream to face their St. Lawrence River rivals, the South Grenville Rangers, October 16. Before the start of the game, a minute of silence was observed in memory of NHL Hall of Fame defenceman Leo Boivin, who died earlier that day.nnThe Rangers opened the game with two goals in the first period, followed by four in the second, and three more in the third.nnMorrisburg scored three goals in the game. The first, a long pass along the boards connected with Jordan Serson, who fired past Rangers goaltender Ben Spicer. The second, late in the second period, from Jonah Bennis – his second of the year – kept the Lions’ hopes alive as the team trailed 6-2 going into the third period.nnSouth Grenville sent three goals past Morrisburg goaltender Dawson Irving in the third period. A highlight for the Lions was alternate captain Dean Lapier scoring his first goal (on a Lions’ power play) since joining the team this season.nnMorrisburg had plenty of power play opportunities to take advantage of as the Rangers earned 39 penalty minutes to the Lions’ 30. South Grenville’s penalty kill blocked Morrisburg in all but one case.nnJacob Servage and Owen Webster led the well-rounded scoring for South Grenville with two goals each. Cooper Kingston, Bryce Macdonald, Jacob McGonegal, Noah Penny, and Jordan Poulin each scored once.nnThe Lions drop to a 1-3-0 record as they sit on a three game losing skid in seventh-place in the National Capital Junior Hockey League.nnMorrisburg hosts the sixth-place St. Isidore Eagles October 23 in the team’s season home opener. Puck drop is at 7:15 p.m.nnThe Lions will travel to Gatineau October 29 to take on the Hull-Volant.nn
