Major-Midget comeback, beat Demons

MORRISBURG – Recovering from their first loss of the season, the South Dundas Lions Major-Midget squad took on the North Dundas Demons February 2nd at the Morrisburg arena, beating them 3-2.nnThe Demons hit the score board late in the first period on a play by Travis McInnis to Nick Brugrons, who put the puck past Lions goalie Christian Francis with 6:46 on the clock. The trio of Avery Holmes, Justin Shay and Austin Berube scored a second goal for the Demons with 2:01 left in the first to take a 2-0 lead.nnThe Lions stayed scoreless until there was 9:01 left in the second period when a play by Cal Bilmer and Brady Smith set up Oakley Beavers for goal. Demons led the Lions 2-1.nnA high stick call against Logan Hummel ended a late period powerplay in the Lions favour, putting the teams in a four-on-four position. Beavers took advantage and with just 14 seconds left in the period, tied the game. The play was assisted by Bilmer and Ewen Baril. Lions and Demons were tied after two periods of play at two apiece.nnPressure mounted for the two teams which continued the third period in a four-on-four stretch. South Dundas’ penalty kill was able to keep the Demons at bay until they were back to full strength on the ice.nnTempers flared and the penalties started to rack up for the two teams.nnA hooking penalty called against Shay for the Demons put the Lions back on the power play midway through the third. Tyler Rae sent a pass over to Griffen Patterson, who in turned sent it in to Lucas Bennis finishing with a goal to give the Lions a 3-2 lead.nnThe Lions successfully held off the Demons from tying the game back up to take the 3-2 win, continuing the teams’ dominance in the Major-Midget league.nnThe Major-Midget Lions have a record of 18 wins, 1 loss and 3 ties with 39 points to lead both the eastern division and the league in overall points with two games left in the regular season.
