Thursday’s announcement of the $15 billion “investment” by Honda to build batteries and electric cars in Ontario is the latest in the longer line of car companies bellying up to the trough for tax breaks and subsidies. Ford, VW, and what used to be Chrysler/Dodge already have attached themselves to the government subsidy/tax break scheme.
It’s the latest in a long line of governments dumping big money into big companies to create jobs.
A tax break is a form of subsidy. Anything that creates a net corporate gain is an incitement to do businesses in that jurisdiction. It’s funny how many of these corporate giants don’t have to use their own money for it, and can get large sums from governments. Yet a small business needing a meagre sum of money to stay afloat or expand will have to jump through so many hoops? That hardly seems fair.
What isn’t subsidized anymore? My grocery bill, that’s what.
Thank goodness that our next Prime Minister is going to end all the subsidies. Media, no subsidies for them. Corporations, no subsidies for them – wait. That doesn’t work for them. Probably no subsidies for companies that didn’t support the new government.
I wonder if the next PM had time to think about subsidies when he was hobnobbing with known right-wing extremests?
Like many, I too am subsidized by the government. Not at a level to which to live comfortably nor affect my opinions. One could dream.
If everyone is subsidized, and everyone’s tax rates are cut too, who pays the subsidy?
Three things
Something to listen to – This one by TALK, is on repeat on my iTunes playlist. Short song, fast beat, overall a good song.
Something to watch – I use a lot of notebooks. My favourites are Moleskine and Leuchtturm 1917. I’ve been using more the Leuchtturm 1917 books lately, lined and dotted, for various things. The A5 size works better for me than the narrower Moleskine. Work notes, non-work notes. Even bought one to turn into a family recipe book. This is a good comparison video, even if he uses the wrong pens. My preferred pens are the Bic Glide Atlantis. A coworker put me on to these. Awesome pen for writing. TomBow Mono HB Pencils work if you need those instead.
Something to read – John Ivison wrote this piece of about Canada’s broken military procurement and how it relates to the inside deal the F35 got. Give it a read by clicking the link (https://nationalpost.com/opinion/canada-military-industrial-complex-f35-fighter-jets).
